Disadvantages:

can be difficult to keep in place (often must be taped or wrapped to adhere to scar site)
will not work in established older scars

Stretch Marks
Advantages:

Easy to apply
Least expensive of all topical scar treatments Component of many topical scar creams

Disadvantages:

Despite popularity, its effectiveness is unproven oil may stain clothing if in contact 

Cost:

Less than $10 for a one month's supply as an oil Much more costly as part of other topical creams

Advantages:

Easy to apply and wash off
Has vitamin E, steroid, and silicone particle components, May be used to lighten scar as well (different formulation) 

Disadvantages:
Not as effective in established scars
Cost:
$65/ bottle

The use of a variety of other topical treatments, including Retin A, colchicines, onion extract, allantoin, gylcosaminoglycan, plant extracts (such as Bulbine frutescens and Centella asiatica), have no proven medical effectiveness in improving the appearance of scars to date.
