How it works:
 
Scars is either cut out and closed primarily or cut out and the scar pattern changed to a geometric pattern (W or Z). Such scar rearrangement repositions them along the natural lines and creases in the skin or turns a straight line into an irregular one.
Cost:
Certain scar conditions may be covered by your health insurance
Depends on length of scar revised. As a general rule, figure $500 per 1 inch or 2.5 cms of scar length

Used for:
  Hypertrophic scars
Atrophic scars
Acne scars (superficial and shallow)
How it works:
Mechanical removal of skin edges with machine-operated diamond wheel
While partially supplanted by the use of the laser today, dermabrasion is still very useful in resurfacing scars and surrounding skin edges in experienced hands
Cost:
$1,000 - $2,500 per treatment session

Used for:
  Acne scars (deep, icepick)
How it works:
Circular cut-out of indented scar with a hand punch of 1 - 4mm. The circular defect is either closed with sutures or replaced with a punch graft of normal skin
Cost:
$50 per punch site

Scar Treatment / Surgical Revision / Skin Grafting

Used for:
  Burn scar contractures
Keloids
How it works:

The entire scarred area is completely cut out and replaced with a split- or full-thickness skin graft taken from normal skin.

This is not commonly done with the exception of burn scar surgery.

A skin graft NEVER looks as good as normal skin.

Cost:
This operative procedure is usually covered by your health insurance due to the cause of the original injury

Used for:
  Very shallow atrophic or mildly hypertrophic scars
Rarely used due to its very superficial effect and better treatment methods of skin removal (e.g., laser, dermabrasion)
How it works:
Removes a superficial layer of skin by creating an acid burn
Cost:
$100 - $500
