Important Principles of Scar Treatments

Many people are, understandably, anxious and would like to have their scars treated as quickly as possible. Some people also have the erroneous idea that scar treatments will restore their skin to its original condition or make the scar go completely away. It is important to understand that scar treatments and healing is a process and may take months or even a year to obtain the best result. Scars can never be completely eliminated, only lessened in appearance.

The timing of scar treatment varies and depends on what type of scar it is and how it currently appears. The traditional thinking in the treatment of scars is to wait for at least a year until it is closer to being 'mature'. Today's management methods allow treatments to begin earlier, working with the healing process, to obtain a result that is both better looking and quicker to achieve.

There are over a dozen type of scar treatments currently available, some surgical, some topical, and some injectable methods. It is important to match the scar problem with the right treatment if any improvement in the scar's appearance is to be seen.
