Indications:
  Mildly Hypertrophic and Atrophic Scars
Shallow Acne Scars
Advantages:
Office-based procedures, some require topical or local anesthesia (CO2, erbium) while other treatments (IPL, BBL) do not
Disadvantages:
The type of scar must be matched to the right laser treatment for results to be seen.
Almost all laser treatments must be done early to be effective.
Cost:
$400 - $1,500 per treatment session
Multiple treatment sessions are usually required for most laser therapies

Scar Treatment / Laser / Pulsed Dye Laser (585nm wavelength)

Used for:
  Scars where the main problem is its red color
Hypertrophic scars which it may help flatten
Stretch marks
How it works:
The laser wavelength targets the red blood cells in the small capillaries causing their destruction and subsequent loss of the red or purple color
May affect the newly forming scar which can cause it to break down and soften

Scar Treatment / Laser / Carbon Dioxide

Used for:
  Acne Scars (superficial, shallow)
Hypertrophic scars (mild thickness)
Atrophic scars (mild depth)
Burn Scars
How it works:
Vaporizes (destroys) the top layer of skin (resurfacing), with skin healing and rebuilding from underlying skin glands
May stimulate collagen formation in Atrophic scars

Scar Treatment / Laser / Erbium (Laser Micropeeling)

Used for:
  Very superficial scars that are either raised (Hypertrophic) or Depressed (Atrophic)
Shallow Acne scars
How it works:
Less vaporization of skin then CO2. More superficial effects with more rapid healing and recovery
Stimulation of collagen (possible thickening) in Atrophic scars
 

The erbium laser penetrates less deep into the skin, requiring  less recovery and more control of amount of skin removed. It also requires multiple treatments because it does not go as deep.

Scar Treatment / Laser / Intense Pulsed Light (IPL; Broad Band Light, BBL)

Used for:
  Hypertrophic and Atrophic scars
Scars that have too much pigment
(hyperpigmented, dark)
How it works:
The many wavelengths of light selectively destroy the color brown (pigment) as well as impact fully formed and newly forming collagen
